About the Artist

Man Ray

Man Ray (Emmanuel Radnitzky) was an American visual artist who, in addition to New York and Hollywood, spent most of his career in France. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal, and was famously good friends with Salvador Dali. He began as a painter and produced major works in a variety of media but was best known for his photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. He was amongst early experimenters with darkroom collage, and is credited with inventing the photogram, a photographic image made by placing objects directly on light-sensitive paper during exposure, which he dubbed the "Rayograph" in reference to himself. He also reinvented the photographic technique of solarization which heightened the surrealism in much of the photography he is most known for.
