About the Artist

Graham Sutherland

Graham Sutherland (1903–1980) was a British artist known for his surreal landscapes and portraiture. Born in Streatham, London, he trained at Goldsmiths' School of Art and began his career as a printmaker before shifting to painting in the 1930s. His early works drew inspiration from Samuel Palmer, focusing on pastoral scenes with abstract, natural forms. During World War II, Sutherland served as an official war artist, capturing industrial sites and bomb damage, which influenced his later themes of suffering and redemption. His religious works, like The Crucifixion for St. Matthew's Church (1944), and his controversial portrait of Winston Churchill (1954) remain iconic. Known for his recurring thorn motifs, Sutherland's style reflected a blend of surrealism and emotional depth. His works were exhibited internationally, and he was honored with the Order of Merit for his contributions to 20th-century British art. Sutherland's legacy endures through his evocative landscapes, religious imagery, and powerful portraits.
