About the Artist

Walasse Ting

Walasse Ting (1929–2010) was a self-taught Chinese-American artist and poet known for his vibrant, colorful paintings. Born in Shanghai, he left China in 1946, lived in Paris in the 1950s where he connected with CoBrA artists, and moved to New York in 1957. His early abstract work later evolved into a bold, figurative style using Chinese brushes and acrylics. Ting authored 13 books, including One Cent Life, a major collaborative portfolio featuring artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1970, and his work is held in major museums such as MoMA, the Guggenheim, and Tate Modern.
