About the Artist

Saul Steinberg

Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) was a Romanian-American artist best known for his work as a cartoonist and illustrator for The New Yorker. Originally a political scientist and philosopher, Steinberg explored social and political systems, language, and art in his diverse career. His art spanned many media, including advertising, photoworks, textiles, and murals. He exhibited in over 80 shows and famously said, "I don’t quite belong to the art, cartoon or magazine world." His work, often humorous yet sophisticated, defied artistic boundaries, blending high and low art in imaginative ways.
