CY TWOMBLY VENUS + ADONIS Galerie Karsten Greve, 2013, 2013
Cy Twombly’s *Venus + Adonis* transforms one of mythology’s great love stories into an expressive rush of color, gesture and handwritten language. Soft clouds of pink, coral and pale gray spread across the composition, interrupted by restless lines, loosely drawn forms and the names of the two lovers scrawled above them.
Created in 1978, the original work refers to the tragic romance between Venus and the mortal Adonis. Rather than illustrating the story directly, Twombly captures its emotional intensity through marks that feel immediate and unguarded. Passion, beauty and loss seem to unfold across the paper in a visual language suspended between drawing, writing and memory.
This poster was produced for Twombly’s 2013 *On Paper* exhibition at Galerie Karsten Greve in Paris. Published in an edition of 900, it offers collectors an evocative example of the artist’s lifelong fascination with classical mythology, poetry and the expressive power of the handwritten mark.
