About the Artist

Christian Berard

Christian Bérard (1902-1949) was a multi-talented French artist known for his contributions to painting, costume and set design, illustration, and fashion. Born in Paris, Bérard studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and quickly gained recognition for his unique artistic vision. He became a prominent figure in the Parisian art scene of the 1920s and 1930s, collaborating with renowned artists, writers, and designers including Jean Cocteau, Coco Chanel, and Christian Dior. Bérard's style was characterized by a blend of classicism and whimsy, often incorporating elements of surrealism and theatricality. He was celebrated for his theatrical costume and set designs, bringing a fresh and innovative approach to the stage. Bérard's work also extended to fashion illustration, where his elegant and expressive drawings captured the essence of haute couture. Tragically, Christian Bérard passed away in 1949 at the age of 46, but his influence on the worlds of art, fashion, and design continues to be celebrated and remembered for its creativity and originality.
