About the Artist

Alberto Magnelli

Alberto Magnelli was an Italian painter and a pioneer of geometric abstraction. Born in Florence, Magnelli began his career influenced by Futurism and Cubism, which shaped his early figurative and still-life works. In the 1910s, he visited Paris and connected with avant-garde artists such as Picasso, Léger, and the Delaunays, deepening his interest in abstraction. By the 1930s, Magnelli had transitioned fully to non-figurative art, creating works characterized by bold, geometric shapes, clean lines, and vibrant color blocks. During World War II, while living in Grasse, France, Magnelli continued to experiment, producing his famous "Stone Series" inspired by the surrounding environment. Magnelli’s work bridges Italian and French modernism, and his influence is evident in the development of European abstract art. His career was celebrated with numerous exhibitions, and his works are housed in major museums worldwide. Magnelli remains a key figure in the history of 20th-century abstraction, known for his harmonious balance of form and color.
