The cover of Derrière le Miroir Issue Number 53-54, dated 1953, features a lithograph by Saul Steinberg printed on cover stock paper as part of an edition of 2500. This iconic art magazine, known for its rich visual presentations and critical essays, often showcased works by prominent modern artists. Steinberg, originally a political scientist and philosopher, became a legendary cartoonist and illustrator for The New Yorker, exploring social and political systems, language, and art throughout his career, which included over 80 exhibitions. A Romanian-American artist (1914–1999), Steinberg described himself as "a writer who draws" and blurred the lines between high and low art, producing diverse works across various media, including advertising, textiles, and murals. His art is characterized by a blend of humor and sophistication, often reflecting his belief that he did not fit neatly into any specific artistic category. This lithograph is unsigned and represents the cover only
