Kandinsky, Wassily

WASSILY KANDINSKY Sunday, Old Russian

Regular price $50

This evocative composition by Vassily Kandinsky captures a richly detailed scene from traditional Russian life, painted during his early figurative period before his transition into abstraction. The work depicts a lively gathering set against the backdrop of a fortified town, with figures in traditional dress, horse-drawn elements, and architectural forms rendered in a mosaic of color and texture.

Kandinsky’s distinctive use of color—layered, luminous, and expressive—already hints at the spiritual and emotional direction that would later define his abstract work. The scene balances narrative detail with a rhythmic arrangement of forms, creating a sense of both movement and harmony.

The wide, panoramic format enhances the storytelling quality of the composition, while the clean museum layout allows the artwork to take full prominence. This poster offers a compelling glimpse into Kandinsky’s formative years, bridging folklore, tradition, and the evolution toward modernism.

A beautiful and historically significant museum poster from the pre-digital poster era, appealing to collectors of early modernism and Russian avant-garde influences.

About the Artist

Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist, credited with creating one of the first purely abstract works. Born in Moscow and raised in Odessa, he studied law before turning to art at age 30. Kandinsky taught at the Bauhaus in Germany until it was shut down by the Nazis in 1933, after which he moved to France. Influenced by color, folk art, music, and spirituality, his pioneering abstract style helped lay the foundation for modern abstract expressionism.
