“Beach Scene with Poodle” by Eric Fischl is a captivating limited edition print that captures the essence of a leisurely day at the beach through the artist's distinctive narrative style. This piece is signed and labeled “B.A.T.” (Bon à Tirer) in pencil by Fischl, indicating it as the artist's approved final proof before the full edition was printed.

In this evocative scene, Fischl masterfully depicts a tranquil beach setting where a poodle becomes a central figure. The poodle, poised and elegant, contrasts with the sprawling expanse of sand and sea. The dog's presence adds a touch of whimsy and sophistication to the otherwise serene landscape.

Fischl’s attention to detail is evident in the way he captures the texture of the sand, the gentle movement of the waves, and the subtle play of light on the water. The beach, with its calm and inviting atmosphere, serves as the perfect backdrop for this engaging narrative. The color palette is both soothing and vibrant, with shades of blue and beige dominating the scene, highlighting the warmth of the sunlit day.

About the Artist

Eric Fischl

Eric Fischl is a major figure in contemporary American painting, celebrated for his emotionally charged and often provocative figurative work. Born in 1948 in New York City and raised in the suburbs of Long Island and later Phoenix, Arizona, Fischl developed an early interest in the tensions of domestic life—an interest that would come to define his art. After studying at the California Institute of the Arts, he began his career in the 1970s and gained widespread attention in the 1980s for paintings that explored the private, sometimes unsettling moments of suburban existence. His subjects often occupy emotionally ambiguous scenes: adolescents caught in moments of sexual discovery, strained family encounters, and dreamlike recollections of memory and desire. Fischl’s work is characterized by bold composition, narrative tension, and a deep commitment to the human figure. His brushwork evokes both immediacy and psychological depth, and his paintings are often charged with voyeuristic intensity. Over time, his practice expanded to include sculpture, printmaking, and monotype, always maintaining his signature interest in human vulnerability and complexity. In addition to his studio work, Fischl has been an outspoken advocate for the value of figurative art in a conceptual art world, encouraging dialogue between artists, institutions, and audiences. His paintings and prints have been exhibited internationally and are held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Fischl lives and works in Sag Harbor, New York, where he continues to produce powerful images that reflect the psychological undercurrents of contemporary life. His art remains a vital exploration of intimacy, conflict, and the subtle dramas that unfold behind closed doors.
