About the Artist

Ralph Goings

Ralph Goings (1928–2016) was an American painter known for his role in the Photorealism movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He is famous for his detailed depictions of everyday American scenes, like hamburger stands, trucks, and banks, painted in an objective style. Goings explained his return to painting in 1963, choosing photorealism to deliberately oppose abstract art, saying, "I wanted to do something shocking... copying a photograph literally upset people, and that encouraged me."
