This compelling exhibition poster was produced for the major retrospective of Eric Fischl held at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg from September 13, 2003 to April 1, 2004. The show, titled Gemälde und Zeichnungen 1979–2001, presented a comprehensive overview of Fischl’s work, spanning over two decades of painting and drawing.

The image featured in the poster exemplifies Fischl’s signature style—psychologically charged figuration rendered with painterly immediacy. A solitary male figure sits in a domestic interior, his posture introspective and tense, while a shadowy presence in the background introduces an element of narrative ambiguity. This tension between intimacy and unease is central to Fischl’s exploration of contemporary life.

The warm palette and fluid brushwork contrast with the emotional complexity of the scene, creating a composition that is both visually engaging and conceptually layered.

A strong and atmospheric example of early 21st-century exhibition design, appealing to collectors of contemporary figurative painting and important museum posters.

About the Artist

Eric Fischl

Eric Fischl is a major figure in contemporary American painting, celebrated for his emotionally charged and often provocative figurative work. Born in 1948 in New York City and raised in the suburbs of Long Island and later Phoenix, Arizona, Fischl developed an early interest in the tensions of domestic life—an interest that would come to define his art. After studying at the California Institute of the Arts, he began his career in the 1970s and gained widespread attention in the 1980s for paintings that explored the private, sometimes unsettling moments of suburban existence. His subjects often occupy emotionally ambiguous scenes: adolescents caught in moments of sexual discovery, strained family encounters, and dreamlike recollections of memory and desire. Fischl’s work is characterized by bold composition, narrative tension, and a deep commitment to the human figure. His brushwork evokes both immediacy and psychological depth, and his paintings are often charged with voyeuristic intensity. Over time, his practice expanded to include sculpture, printmaking, and monotype, always maintaining his signature interest in human vulnerability and complexity. In addition to his studio work, Fischl has been an outspoken advocate for the value of figurative art in a conceptual art world, encouraging dialogue between artists, institutions, and audiences. His paintings and prints have been exhibited internationally and are held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Fischl lives and works in Sag Harbor, New York, where he continues to produce powerful images that reflect the psychological undercurrents of contemporary life. His art remains a vital exploration of intimacy, conflict, and the subtle dramas that unfold behind closed doors.
