This evocative image by Robert Mapplethorpe features the model Thomas, captured in a graceful, slightly crouching pose. With a neutral backdrop accentuated by a geometric, diamond‑white shape, Mapplethorpe crafts a powerful contrast that highlights Thomas’s form and posture.

Thomas is Thomas Williams, also known by the name Joe Simmons, one of Mapplethorpe’s recurring muses during the 1980s. Williams initially worked as a bodybuilder and aspiring actor before his image became widely recognized through Mapplethorpe’s photography. He later appeared in over 100 adult films under his alternate name.

The photograph is presented in a white wood frame with a 1‑inch front profile and a 3/4‑inch side profile, set behind a 4‑inch mat. The framing accentuates the image’s sculptural composition and enhances its refined visual impact—reflecting Mapplethorpe’s iconic blend of formality and intimacy.

About the Artist

Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) was an American photographer renowned for his striking black-and-white images and his exploration of controversial subjects. His work included celebrity portraits, self-portraits, male and female nudes, and elegant floral still lifes. Best known for combining technical precision with provocative content, Mapplethorpe helped spark national debates about art, censorship, and public funding through his photographs of New York’s underground BDSM scene. He was also a close friend and frequent collaborator of musician Patti Smith, whose iconic *Horses* album cover features one of his photographs.
