This image titled Apollo is drawn from a 1994 box set of Robert Mapplethorpe photographs, published by teNeues Publishing Company and printed in Germany. Mapplethorpe’s refined composition captures the timeless beauty of classical sculpture, portraying the mythological figure with a sense of reverence and stillness. The interplay of light and shadow on the marble surface adds depth and drama to this minimalist yet powerful portrait.

Presented in a black wood frame with a 1-inch front profile and a 3/4-inch side profile, and mounted behind a 4-inch mat, the photograph is displayed with a clean, gallery-style elegance that enhances its sculptural quality.

About the Artist

Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) was an American photographer renowned for his striking black-and-white images and his exploration of controversial subjects. His work included celebrity portraits, self-portraits, male and female nudes, and elegant floral still lifes. Best known for combining technical precision with provocative content, Mapplethorpe helped spark national debates about art, censorship, and public funding through his photographs of New York’s underground BDSM scene. He was also a close friend and frequent collaborator of musician Patti Smith, whose iconic *Horses* album cover features one of his photographs.
