First-edition exhibition poster designed by Man Ray for his 1966 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Known as Lips, the composition features the artist’s celebrated image of a pair of red lips floating above a landscape, drawn from his painting À l’heure de l’observatoire—Les Amoureux (Observatory Time—The Lovers, 1932–1934).

The dramatic shift in scale transforms a familiar human feature into an enigmatic, dreamlike presence. Suspended between portraiture and landscape, the image reflects Man Ray’s Surrealist approach: ordinary forms become unexpected and evocative through changes in context and proportion. The red lips provide a striking focal point against the subdued background, giving the poster a visual presence that extends beyond its original role as an exhibition announcement.

Produced for the exhibition opening on October 25, 1966, this poster connects one of Man Ray’s most recognizable compositions with an important presentation of his work in Los Angeles. This impression is unsigned and unnumbered. An undetermined number of posters were signed for the event.

About the Artist

Man Ray

Man Ray (Emmanuel Radnitzky) was an American visual artist who, in addition to New York and Hollywood, spent most of his career in France. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal, and was famously good friends with Salvador Dali. He began as a painter and produced major works in a variety of media but was best known for his photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. He was amongst early experimenters with darkroom collage, and is credited with inventing the photogram, a photographic image made by placing objects directly on light-sensitive paper during exposure, which he dubbed the "Rayograph" in reference to himself. He also reinvented the photographic technique of solarization which heightened the surrealism in much of the photography he is most known for.
