Paul Narkiewicz
Paul Narkiewicz, born in 1937 in Easton, Pennsylvania, is a multidisciplinary New York-based artist whose career spans painting, sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics. He earned a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art in the early 1960s before relocating to New York in 1966. There, he emerged as a respected printmaker, collaborating with notable figures such as Romare Bearden, Alex Katz, and Ellsworth Kelly.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Narkiewicz exhibited his work in New York galleries and participated in public art projects—most notably contributing to Socrates Sculpture Park in 1987. In recent years, he has cultivated a vibrant ceramic practice at Greenwich House Pottery, where since 2010 he has produced hundreds of small figurative sculptures. His work was featured in the 2023 solo exhibition A Figure Enters at Jane Hartsook Gallery, alongside archival watercolors and prints.
Narkiewicz is known for his repetitive and deeply meditative process—creating fields of small figures, each subtly distinct, forming communities of ceramic works that echo the rhythmic repetition of his printmaking. His earlier watercolor landscapes, rendered during summers in Italy, distilled natural forms into expressive blocks of color, merging painterly insight with sculptural sensibility.
Paul’s work is held in the permanent collections of institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Princeton University Art Museum, the RISD Museum, and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. While his early career was grounded in printmaking, his later pivot to sculpture has revitalized his practice and introduced his visual language to new audiences.
Unconventional, quietly persistent, and deeply rooted in craft, Narkiewicz continues to develop an artist’s lifetime of focused exploration—integrating community, process, and form into every creation.
