ROBERT INDIANA Like A Rolling Stone, 2016

Robert Indiana’s *Like a Rolling Stone* brings together two defining voices of postwar American culture. Inspired by Bob Dylan’s groundbreaking 1965 song, the composition transforms its memorable language into a bold arrangement of numbers, words and geometric forms.

Four circular emblems dominate the center, each built around the number four and surrounded by phrases drawn from the song. Set within a tilted diamond of brilliant yellow, black and red, the text takes on the visual force of advertising, road signs and pinball-machine graphics. The result is energetic and immediately recognizable as Indiana, yet charged with Dylan’s themes of uncertainty, identity and the loss of security.

This five-color lithographic poster was created for *Robert Indiana: Now and Then* at the Bates College Museum of Art in 2016. The exhibition marked the public debut of Indiana’s *Like a Rolling Stone* series, bringing together the artist’s graphic precision with the work of the musician and poet he considered a major influence. Vibrant, clever and culturally layered, the poster offers an engaging meeting point between Pop Art and rock-and-roll history.
