About the Artist

Bernard Buffet

Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was a Paris-born painter who became one of the most recognizable figures in post-war French art. A prolific artist, he worked across painting, prints, posters, and book illustration, bringing his stark, haunting imagery to a broad audience. His sharp lines, elongated figures, and muted palette set him apart from the dominant abstract movements of his time. Deeply influenced by the existential mood of post-war Europe, Buffet remained devoted to figurative art, crafting a disciplined, melancholic style that reflected the anxieties of his era and gave his work a timeless, graphic power.
