This artwork is part of the Art Sounds Portfolio created by Michael Cotten and Prince in 1986. It is a limited edition piece, signed and numbered in pencil by both Cotten and Prince, with only 200 copies in existence.

Early in his career, Prince teamed up with Michael Cotten, a former member of The Tubes, to form Cotten/Prince, an artistic design partnership. This collaboration brought together their artistic expertise to work on a variety of creative projects. They worked alongside The Tubes' choreographer, Kenny Ortega (known for Dirty Dancing and High School Musical), devising the production design and theatrical staging for The Tubes' live shows and videos. Additionally, Cotten and Prince were responsible for designing album covers and other graphic design elements for the band.

We came up with a style and air-brush technique which allowed us to design and paint some of the world’s largest murals. One of our most famous murals was the “Flying Records” on the exterior of the A&M Records building in Hollywood, CA. The mural’s demise was mourned by many in the music community, in particular Jerry Moss, founder of A&M Records. The destruction of the mural was documented in a 2012 NPR interview. Other iconic murals include “Crashing Waves” on San Francisco’s Cliff House and the interior of The Chemical Bank of New York at Rockefeller Center in New York City."

About the Artist

Cotten/Prince

Michael Cotten, originally known as a founding member and keyboardist of the innovative rock band The Tubes, transitioned from music into the visual arts during the 1980s. His early fascination with synthesizers and stage production naturally evolved into a broader interest in visual design and multimedia collaborations. In 1986, Cotten, together with fellow Tubes member and visual artist Prairie Prince, produced the Art Sounds Portfolio, a limited edition suite of prints that merged their musical backgrounds with a distinct pop-art sensibility. One notable piece from the series features bold, abstract forms and rhythmic compositions that echo the energy of live performance. Printed in a signed and numbered edition of 200, the Art Sounds Portfolio stands as a testament to Cotten’s creative versatility and his ability to translate auditory experience into visual form. These rare prints capture a unique moment in 1980s art, blending music, design, and graphic experimentation in a format that appeals to both art collectors and fans of music history.
