From his evocative Viva Cuba series, Children of the Caribbean is a 2005 painting by Canadian artist Dwight Baird that delves into the themes of family, resilience, and everyday life in Cuba. Set in a weathered doorway, the scene captures a tender moment: children at play under the watchful gaze of their mother, who cradles the youngest in her arms while overseeing the safety of the others. It is a tribute to maternal care, community, and the enduring spirit of Cuban families.

Baird’s masterful technique is evident in his meticulous rendering of detail—the soft, sun-bleached terracotta tones of Havana’s exterior walls, the finely wrought iron stems of the barred windows, and the quiet but powerful presence of Che Guevara's image, a ubiquitous symbol seen throughout the city during this period.

Children of the Caribbean is more than a visual record—it’s a heartfelt narrative painted at a time when Cuba stood at a cultural and political crossroads. Baird's work preserves a moment of everyday beauty, dignity, and warmth amidst a rapidly transforming urban landscape.
