Original exhibition poster for Howard Hodgkin: Paintings 1975–1995, a major traveling retrospective presented at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; and Kunstverein Düsseldorf in 1995–1996. The poster is hand-signed and dated “1995” by Hodgkin in black ink.

The design reproduces Hodgkin’s Sad Flowers (1995), an expressive composition of sweeping, gestural brushwork. Saturated passages of red, orange and yellow emerge from a surrounding field of deep blue and green, suggesting a loosely defined bouquet without resolving into conventional floral forms. Hodgkin’s painted border becomes part of the composition, intensifying the work’s sense of depth and framing the image within the image.

About the Artist

Howard Hodgkin

Howard Hodgkin (1932–2017) was a celebrated British painter known for his bold use of color and emotionally charged abstraction. Trained at Camberwell School of Art and Bath Academy of Art, he rejected labels, describing himself simply as a painter. His works, marked by gestural brushwork and intimate subject matter, often evoked feelings rather than depicting objects. Associated with the “New British Painting” movement of the 1980s, Hodgkin earned international recognition, winning the Turner Prize in 1985 and a knighthood in 1992. His legacy endures through his vibrant canvases, works on paper, and prints.
