About the Artist

Karen Kilimnik

Karen Kilimnik (born 1955 in Philadelphia) is a well-established figure in contemporary art with a distinguished career spanning several decades. Kilimnik first garnered international attention in the early 1990s with her inventive "scatter" installations—assemblages of found objects, photocopies, and clothing referencing pop culture and historical narratives, famously exemplified by The Hellfire Club Episode of the Avengers (1989). Her paintings and drawings, known for combining expressive brushwork, bold colors, and a playful, dreamlike aesthetic, often blend high and low cultural imagery—celebrity portraits, classical references, kitsch, and fairy tale motifs. Kilimnik has shown widely in major solo exhibitions at institutions including the Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), the Serpentine Gallery (London), the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She has also participated in high-profile group exhibitions, including the Carnegie International (2018–19) and multiple shows at MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and Tate Modern. Her works are represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, MOCA Los Angeles, the Hammer Museum, and international museums such as Fondation Prada and Fondazione Vignola . Critics have described Kilimnik’s work as sharp, witty, and deeply imaginative, noting how she “collapsed boundaries between fiction and history” and influenced a generation of younger artists like Elizabeth Peyton and Tracey Emin through her hybrid approach to media and narrative . In summary: Karen Kilimnik is an accomplished contemporary artist, with established recognition in both institutional and market contexts—not an emerging talent.
