Silkscreen print featuring one of Rodrigue’s iconic Blue Dogs, signed and numbered Artist Proof in gold marker. Published in 2000, this work belongs to the most recognizable series by the celebrated New Orleans artist.

Rodrigue (1944–2013) first developed the Blue Dog in the early 1990s, inspired by the Cajun legend of the loup-garou (a ghostly werewolf). Over time, the Blue Dog became his unmistakable signature — a pop-culture icon rendered with bold, flat colors, haunting eyes, and crisp outlines. Rodrigue’s style blends regional Louisiana folklore with a distinctly modern sensibility, elevating a local tale into an international symbol of contemporary art.

This print captures the playful yet enigmatic presence of the Blue Dog, a figure that has come to embody both Rodrigue’s personal vision and the cultural identity of New Orleans.

About the Artist

George Rodrigue

George Rodrigue was an American painter known for his iconic and long-running Blue Dog series of paintings. Beginning in the late 1980s, Rodrigue painted a reoccurring character of a blue dog with yellow eyes, always in the same pose but placed in a variety of settings. The character became a popular and well-known image outside of the art world, notably being featured in an Absolut Vodka advertising campaign. He was born on March 13, 1944 in New Iberia, LA and studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In 1975, he was awarded an Honorable Mention from Le Salon in Paris, and dubbed by the French newspaper Le Figaro as the “American Rousseau.” The artist has also painted Cajun celebrities, such as Paul Prudhomme, and several US presidents, including George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
