About the Artist

Alex Katz

Alex Katz (b. 1927) is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his flat, minimalist style in figurative and portrait work. Born in Brooklyn, he studied at The Cooper Union and Skowhegan School, where plein air painting influenced his approach. Spending summers in Lincolnville, Maine, his work features bold color and emotional detachment. Katz has also designed sets and costumes for dance productions since 1959, including his 1984 lithograph Pas de Deux for the American Dance Festival’s 50th anniversary.
