About the Artist

Claudio Abate

Claudio Abate (1943–2017) was a celebrated Italian photographer, born and based in Rome. He emerged from an artistic family; his father’s studio in Via Margutta nurtured his earliest visual sensibilities. Abate acquired his first camera in adolescence and by age 15 was already operating a photography lab in his father’s studio. Early in his career, he collaborated with press agencies and became an assistant to Magnum-affiliated photographers, helping him gain access to art and cultural reportage. Over the 1960s and 1970s, Abate became a key visual chronicler of the Arte Povera, conceptual, and performance art scenes in Rome. He documented landmark moments, from installations by Jannis Kounellis to live performances by Pino Pascali and Giuseppe Penone. His oeuvre remains influential as both visual history and as photographic art, showing how the lens can shape our memory of artistic movements.
