Original exhibition poster, plate signed.

This compelling composition by Paul Jenkins merges abstraction with literary homage, created for The Beckett Festival in 1978. At its center is a striking portrait of Samuel Beckett, surrounded by layered fields of color, gestural marks, and intersecting lines that echo Jenkins’ signature abstract style.

Known for his fluid technique and exploration of color as a dynamic force, Jenkins creates a visual dialogue between form and emotion. Here, translucent washes and textured passages frame the central image, suggesting movement, thought, and the complexity of Beckett’s work. The interplay of structure and spontaneity reflects both artists’ shared interest in introspection and modern expression.

The plate signature adds authenticity and reinforces the connection to the artist’s hand, while the overall composition captures a moment where visual art and literature intersect.

A sophisticated and visually rich poster from the pre-digital poster era, appealing to collectors of abstract expressionism and literary-related works.

Framing available upon request.

About the Artist

Paul Jenkins

Paul Jenkins (1923–2012) was an American abstract expressionist painter known for his use of flowing paints and vibrant color. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he was influenced early on by visits to the Nelson-Atkins Museum and artists such as Thomas Hart Benton. After serving in the U.S. Maritime Service and Naval Air Corps during World War II, he studied at the Art Students League in New York under Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor, where he encountered leading abstract artists like Rothko and Pollock. In 1953, Jenkins moved to Europe, eventually settling between Paris and New York. Peggy Guggenheim purchased his work in 1959, helping boost his career. Inspired by Goethe’s color theories, he often titled his paintings with “Phenomena,” reflecting his belief in a dialog between artist and artwork. Jenkins described his style as “abstract phenomenism” and worked in oil, watercolor, and ink throughout his career.
