MARC CHAGALL La Ruche, 1979
Original exhibition poster created by Marc Chagall for his 1969 show at the Musée de Brest, France, devoted to his lithographs printed at Mourlot in Paris. On the right, Chagall depicts himself releasing a bird into the sky – a recurring symbol of freedom, spirit, and transcendence in his work – while the composition’s sweeping lines and translucent color washes evoke both Old Testament imagery and the artist’s poetic inner world.
Printed at Mourlot on quality paper for the museum’s January–March 1969 exhibition, this poster belongs to the prized pre-digital poster era, when artists worked directly with master printers and every color separation was done by hand. It stands as both an artwork in its own right and a historic document of Chagall’s long collaboration with Mourlot and his enduring themes of hope, faith, and imagination.
