Very large original advertising poster created by Paul Davis in 1979 for Mobil Oil Corporation, the principal sponsor of Masterpiece Theatre. This striking poster was produced to promote the acclaimed television series Disraeli: Portrait of a Romantic, which aired that same year.

The series dramatized the life of Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881), the charismatic British Prime Minister, novelist, and romantic visionary who rose from outsider status to become one of the most influential political figures of Victorian England. The show explored themes of ambition, love, and power, portraying Disraeli’s political triumphs, his deep affection for his wife Mary Anne, and his enduring belief in idealism within the often cynical world of politics.

Paul Davis’s artwork masterfully captures this blend of romance and intellect, using his signature painterly realism and theatrical composition to evoke both the grandeur of the era and the emotional complexity of Disraeli himself.

About the Artist

Paul Davis

Paul Davis (1938–2018) was an influential American illustrator and designer whose work helped redefine editorial and poster illustration in the late 20th century. Born in Philadelphia and trained at the University of the Arts, Davis emerged in the 1960s as a leading figure in a new wave of illustrators who brought fine art sensibilities into commercial work. He gained widespread recognition through his contributions to major publications such as The New York Times, Time, Esquire, and The Atlantic, where his portraits—often of cultural and political figures—were noted for their psychological depth, expressive line, and painterly subtlety. Davis had a distinctive ability to capture likeness while conveying mood and character, often with minimal yet powerful means. In addition to editorial illustration, he created memorable posters and album covers, including work for Broadway productions and musicians. His style blended realism with abstraction, frequently incorporating layered textures, muted palettes, and a strong sense of composition. Davis was also a respected educator, teaching at institutions such as the School of Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design, where he influenced generations of illustrators. Over his career, he received numerous accolades, including induction into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. Today, Paul Davis is regarded as one of the most important American illustrators of his era, bridging the gap between fine art and commercial illustration with elegance and intelligence.
