This is a reproduction of the etching by Velázquez’s titled Las Meninas. It was produced by the Louvre Museum using the calcolgraphie technique on fine Lana paper. It faithfully reproduces the iconic 1656 masterpiece, known for its rich complexity and masterful use of perspective. The scene depicts Infanta Margarita with her ladies-in-waiting, courtiers, and a pair of dwarfs, all set in a grand chamber. Velázquez appears in the background painting on a large canvas, while a distant mirror reflects the king and queen. This etching captures the depth, light, and intrigue that make Las Meninas one of the most studied and celebrated works in Western art history.

About the Artist

Diego Velazquez

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez[a] (baptized June 6, 1599 – August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c. 1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656).
