This poster — created for “Art-77” (which would later evolve into WASHART) — presents Susan Pear Meisel’s cheerful, lively vision of Washington, D.C. In “The White House,” childlike sailboats drift across a fountain, balloons float skyward, and crowds of people — families, children, passersby — gather on the White House lawn. The scene pulses with life, joy, and a sense of American community, turning a political landmark into a playground of innocence and optimism.

About the Artist

Susan Pear Meisel

Susan Pear Meisel (b. 1947, New York) has spent over 50 years producing vibrant paintings, silkscreens, and lithographs that celebrate urban landmarks and everyday public life. Her work draws on the traditions of artists such as Maurice Prendergast, Raoul Dufy, and Red Grooms, blending playful line work and bright, joyous color to depict crowds of people — often women and children — in bustling city environments. Her prints — whether silkscreens or lithographs — retain the same lively layering of color and energetic linework as her paintings. The “inking” process in her print works preserves tonal vibrancy and depth, giving each piece a cheerful, accessible, almost “storybook” quality. Over the decades, Meisel’s art has gained wide exposure: she’s been commissioned to depict landmarks across New York City and Washington, D.C., and her works have even been included in the U.S. government’s official “Art in Embassies” program.
