Milvia Maglione's A Day Out is a compelling print that reflects her unique blend of Surrealism and Pop Art sensibilities. The composition features a solitary man standing amidst lush vegetation, gazing upward at a surreal scene of floating objects in a vast blue sky. The scene evokes a sense of dreamlike curiosity and otherworldly contemplation.

Maglione employs a technique reminiscent of chiaroscuro, where she skillfully leaves key elements — the central figure and floating objects — as untouched portions of the raw canvas, creating a stark contrast against the surrounding richly colored environment. This method draws the viewer's focus to the man and the ethereal objects above, emphasizing themes of observation, isolation, and wonder.

The work exemplifies Maglione’s mastery of form and color, as well as her fascination with the interplay between the real and the imaginary. Her use of untouched negative space to highlight the subject matter aligns with her broader practice of drawing from childhood stories, theater sets, and cultural symbolism. "A Day Out" is a prime example of her ability to transform simple narratives into visually rich, conceptually layered works that continue to captivate collectors and contemporary art enthusiasts.

About the Artist

Milvia Maglione

Milvia Maglione (1934–2010) was an Italian-born French painter, graphic designer, and decorator whose work seamlessly blended elements of Surrealism and Pop Art. Born in Bari, Italy, she pursued studies in etching and photography across Italy, Switzerland, and France. In the late 1960s, Maglione gained recognition through her participation in the Salon de la Jeune Peinture (1966) and the 5th Biennale de Paris (1967). She was associated with prominent literary and artistic figures, including André Pieyre de Mandiargues, Italo Calvino, Dino Buzzati, Marcel Duchamp, and Piero Manzoni. Her artistic practice was characterized by the use of brushes, stencils, chisels, and needles to create landscapes reminiscent of theater sets and children's tales. Maglione's works often featured floating figures and objects, evoking a poetic universe of games and dreams. She drew inspiration from the banners created by women for the Feast of the Virgin in Apulia, reflecting a deep engagement with female culture and childhood themes. Throughout her career, Maglione was actively involved in feminist art movements. She participated in exhibitions such as "Combative Acts, Profiles and Voices" at A.I.R. Gallery in New York (1976) and "Feminie" (1977). In 1982, she inaugurated the Galerie des Femmes in Paris. Additionally, she taught at the Université Paris 8 for a decade and created posters for the Italian feminist publishing house Tartaruga, as well as book covers for Éditions des femmes-Antoinette Fouque.
