In Purple Mountain Majesties, Dwight Baird pays tribute to the Colorado Rockies, subtly incorporating jersey numbers into the players’ batting gloves to honor iconic figures in the team’s history. The numbers and their likely references are:

#9 - Dante Bichette: A key member of the Rockies’ "Blake Street Bombers," known for his powerful bat.

#33 - Larry Walker: A Hall of Famer and one of the greatest Rockies players, celebrated for his all-around skills.

#14 - Andres Galarraga: "The Big Cat," a fan favorite and dominant power hitter during the Rockies' early years.

#10 - Vinny Castilla: A cornerstone of the Rockies’ lineup and a prolific hitter, especially at Coors Field.

Baird’s work creatively captures the spirit of the Rockies while honoring these early franchise legends, blending artistry with baseball nostalgia.

About the Artist

Dwight Baird

Canadian born artist Dwight Baird has been painting full-time for the last forty-five years. For the last twenty years, Baird has been working in acrylics, developing a new style of contemporary realism - mixing broad impressionist brush strokes combined with specific detailed areas in his work. He is also a member of the Canadian Watercolour Society. Baird has produced an extensive series of pieces on Cuba, depicting many facets of the daily struggle throughout the country. These works are not only a dramatic illustration of the challenges of urban life but also a historical documentation of a country striving for dramatic change - a pictorial record of a time in their history which will never be seen again.
