This striking still life by Robert Mapplethorpe, titled Apples and Urn, reflects the artist’s classical sensibility and meticulous attention to form. The composition features a grouping of apples beside a traditional urn, arranged with precision to evoke a timeless, almost sculptural presence. Mapplethorpe’s mastery of lighting and contrast transforms these everyday objects into a study of shape, shadow, and serenity.

Originally part of a 1994 collection published by teNeues Publishing Company and printed in Germany, the image is presented in a white wood frame with a 1-inch front profile and a 3/4-inch side profile, mounted behind a 4-inch mat. The elegant presentation reinforces the photograph’s refined aesthetic, making it a perfect accent for interiors that value simplicity, balance, and quiet elegance.

About the Artist

Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) was an American photographer renowned for his striking black-and-white images and his exploration of controversial subjects. His work included celebrity portraits, self-portraits, male and female nudes, and elegant floral still lifes. Best known for combining technical precision with provocative content, Mapplethorpe helped spark national debates about art, censorship, and public funding through his photographs of New York’s underground BDSM scene. He was also a close friend and frequent collaborator of musician Patti Smith, whose iconic *Horses* album cover features one of his photographs.
