About the Artist

Jack Youngerman

Jack Youngerman (1926–2020) was an American artist known for abstract paintings featuring simplified organic forms and exploring figure-and-ground relationships. Born in Missouri, he studied art at the University of North Carolina and the University of Missouri before moving to Paris on a G.I. Scholarship. There, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he befriended Ellsworth Kelly and was influenced by artists like Constantin Brancusi and Jean Arp. Youngerman's first exhibition was in 1950 at Galerie Maeght in Paris. After moving to New York in 1956, he gained recognition with exhibitions worldwide. His works are held in major collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art.
