About the Artist

Robert Motherwell

Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) was a prominent American painter and printmaker associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, he studied at Stanford University and later earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Harvard. Motherwell gained fame for his "Elegy to the Spanish Republic" series, reflecting the Spanish Civil War's influence through bold, gestural brushwork. Beyond painting, he delved into lithography, collaborating with master printers to produce highly sought-after posters featuring his abstract forms and vivid colors. Motherwell's impactful contributions to art continue to inspire artists and collectors worldwide, solidifying his legacy in the annals of Abstract Expressionism.
