About the Artist

Emile Deyrolle

Émile Deyrolle (1838–1917) was a French naturalist, taxidermist, and educator, best known for his contributions to the field of natural history education through the founding of the Deyrolle taxidermy and natural history shop in Paris. Born in Nancy, France, Deyrolle established his shop in 1831, initially focusing on the preservation and display of animals for scientific study and educational purposes. Over time, Deyrolle's shop evolved into a renowned institution, offering a wide range of educational materials, including specimens, models, charts, and other resources for the study of biology, zoology, and botany. Deyrolle's commitment to promoting the study of natural history made his shop a popular destination for students, teachers, scientists, and collectors alike. Today, Deyrolle's legacy lives on through the continued operation of the Deyrolle shop in Paris, which remains a beloved and iconic institution in the world of natural history education and preservation.
