About the Artist

A.M. Cassandre

Cassandre (1901–1968), born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron, was a French painter, poster artist, and typeface designer known for revolutionizing graphic design in the early 20th century. Born in Ukraine to French parents, he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. Influenced by Cubism and Surrealism, he gained acclaim in the 1930s for his striking, geometric posters—especially for travel and brands like Dubonnet. He co-founded the Alliance Graphique advertising agency and created iconic typefaces such as Bifur and Peignot. His work merged fine art with commercial design, elevating posters to a modern art form. In 1936, MoMA exhibited his work, leading to commissions from Harper’s Bazaar. Cassandre’s bold compositions and integration of typography left a lasting impact on modern visual culture and graphic design.
