About the Artist

XXieme Siecle

San Lazzaro, with his Italian periodical of illustrations nommé XXe Siècle debuted in 1938; renowned as a gifted connoisseur of the visual arts - his famous periodicals featured imagery from varied points of the globe, the hook of each his masterful editions were the inclusion of new original prints within every issue. Many artists contributed to his work such as, Joan Miró, Wassily Kandinksy, and Hans Arp, to name a few among the many. From works of the Western world to the Far East, Lazzaro graced his readers with stupefying imagery each year of publication, with the exceptional hiatus such as the one he took between 1939 to 1951. XXe Siècle far from being a static publication displayed certain dichotomies after the year 1951 and Lazzaro began to focus on more on the content within his chosen oeuvres. Thematics, a study of the material - including studies on such things as mark making, spacial components, and most remarkably on the exchange between the Italian and French artists. The periodical, distrubuted by Carlo Gadazzo acted as a conduit for business between both himself and San Lazzaro as he later featured Lazzaro’s French Contemporary work upon his gallery walls. In 1968, San Lazzaro stepped down as head of XXe Siècle wherein shortly after he was succeeded by Léon Amiel, who purchased the now XXe Siècle Company. San Lazzaro continued his literary authorship and visual imagery compilations, publishing pieces like Homage to Marino Marini (New York 1970) until his death in 1974. Posthumously, Lazzaro’s works were celebrated in two exhibitions that were thereafter dedicated to him titled - Ommagio a XXe Siècle’ (Milan, December 1974) and ‘San Lazarro et ses Amis’ (Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris 1975).
