Historic hand-colored wood engraving titled “Passage du Pont d’Arcole” from the celebrated portfolio Napoléon par l’Image Populaire, published by Pellerin et Cie, Paris, 1912. The dramatic composition depicts Napoleon’s famous crossing at the Bridge of Arcole during the Italian campaign, rendered in the bold, highly animated visual language that made the Epinal prints legendary throughout France.

Originally created from wood engraved plates produced between 1819 and 1863 by the renowned Epinal workshop founded by Jean-Charles Pellerin, these images were intended for popular distribution and helped shape the visual mythology of Napoleon for generations. Printed with vivid hand coloring and accompanied by extensive historical text below the image, the work reflects the charm and immediacy of early popular printmaking from the pre-digital era.

The 1912 portfolio preserved many fragile earlier compositions that otherwise might not have survived. Today these prints are prized for their historical importance, folk-art character, and strong decorative appeal.
