About the Artist

Louise Nevelson

Louise Nevelson (1899–1988) was an influential American sculptor known for her large-scale abstract works made from discarded wood and objects. Born in Ukraine and raised in the U.S., she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design. Nevelson gained recognition in the 1950s for her unique, monochromatic sculptures, often painted black, white, or gold. Her work, associated with Abstract Expressionism, transformed found materials into monumental, wall-mounted installations. In 1967, she became the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Nevelson's legacy continues to inspire the world of modern sculpture.
