TON SCHULTEN Town by Night, 1999

Town by Night is a reproduction of Ton Schulten’s celebrated work, published in 1999 in Germany by Achenbach. This piece highlights Schulten’s mastery of "Concensism," his unique style defined by harmonious blocks of color, light, and form.

In Town by Night, Schulten captures the quiet charm of a nighttime townscape. The structured geometry of the buildings is softened by a glowing interplay of rich, deep hues—blues, purples, and blacks—interspersed with warm golden accents that evoke the light emanating from windows and streetlamps. The composition draws viewers into a serene, almost meditative atmosphere, blending abstraction with a profound sense of place.

About the Artist

Ton Schulten

Ton Schulten (b. 1938, in Ootmarsum, Overijssel) is a Dutch painter who mainly paints landscapes using bright blocks of colour. Schulten was one of six baker's children. He graduated from the Enschede Academy for Art and Industry in 1962 as a graphic designer and worked in advertising. In 1991 he was in a serious car accident on Tenerife, in which a friend was killed and he and his wife Ank Lammerink were put into a coma. After the accident his style changed and he began painting landscapes of the Twente area using initially primary colours and later also pastel shades. Ootmarsum houses Schulten's own gallery and a Ton Schulten museum, which opened in 1997. His work has great commercial success. He was knighted a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2000. In 2004 the German art critic Harmut Rau named his style of painting Concensism. "My goal is to bring people joy, love and peace, and to show them harmony. My intention is for my pictures to stimulate people to think positively. I hope that they will let themselves be inspired by the colors."
