Offset lithograph by Alberto Magnelli titled The Couple, created for an exhibition held at Galerie Lelong, Paris, during FIAC 88 at the Grand Palais in 1988. The exhibition celebrated a retrospective of the artist’s work spanning the years 1914–1969.

This elegant and visually refined exhibition poster features one of Magnelli’s lyrical figurative compositions from his transitional period before his complete move into abstraction. Depicting a stylized couple walking arm in arm through a brightly colored architectural landscape, the image combines simplified forms, elongated figures, and bold geometric planes characteristic of the artist’s highly recognizable visual language.

Magnelli was one of the pioneering figures of European modernism and later became closely associated with abstraction and the Parisian avant-garde. While many collectors know him for his geometric abstract compositions, works such as The Couple reveal the important bridge between figuration and abstraction that defined much of his early and middle career. The flattened perspective, vivid blocks of color, and rhythmic arrangement of forms already suggest the structural experimentation that would later dominate his mature abstract works.

Printed for Galerie Lelong’s retrospective presentation during FIAC 88, this poster also captures an important moment in the late twentieth-century Paris art world, when historic European modernists were being rediscovered and reintroduced to a new generation of collectors and institutions. The strong graphic design and vibrant palette make the poster particularly appealing as both collectible ephemera and decorative modernist imagery.

A beautiful example of pre-digital exhibition poster design that will appeal to collectors of School of Paris artists, modernist exhibition posters, and twentieth-century European art.

About the Artist

Alberto Magnelli

Alberto Magnelli was an Italian painter and a pioneer of geometric abstraction. Born in Florence, Magnelli began his career influenced by Futurism and Cubism, which shaped his early figurative and still-life works. In the 1910s, he visited Paris and connected with avant-garde artists such as Picasso, Léger, and the Delaunays, deepening his interest in abstraction. By the 1930s, Magnelli had transitioned fully to non-figurative art, creating works characterized by bold, geometric shapes, clean lines, and vibrant color blocks. During World War II, while living in Grasse, France, Magnelli continued to experiment, producing his famous "Stone Series" inspired by the surrounding environment. Magnelli’s work bridges Italian and French modernism, and his influence is evident in the development of European abstract art. His career was celebrated with numerous exhibitions, and his works are housed in major museums worldwide. Magnelli remains a key figure in the history of 20th-century abstraction, known for his harmonious balance of form and color.
