Martin Wong was a Chinese-American painter and sculptor born in Guangdong, China, who later spent time in Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States, where he developed a deeply personal and distinctive visual language.

His work is often associated with Neo-Expressionism, though it resists strict categorization, sometimes described as a form of “euphemistic abstractionism.” Wong’s paintings are immediately recognizable for their thick, tactile surfaces—built through heavy impasto and rugged, expressive brushwork that lend the compositions a striking physical presence, almost sculptural in effect.

At the core of his practice is a poetic exploration of solitude, intimacy, love, loss, and survival. Wong drew inspiration from a rich blend of sources, merging American urban narratives and folklore with traditional Chinese mythology and the stories passed down by his grandmother.
