About the Artist

Jose Maria Sicilia

José María Sicilia (born 1954, Madrid, Spain) is a prominent Spanish contemporary artist known for his poetic, abstract works that often draw inspiration from nature, light, and memory. A key figure in post-Franco Spanish art, he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and later moved to Paris and New York, where he became part of the international art scene in the 1980s. Sicilia is celebrated for his experimental use of materials, including encaustic (wax painting), photography, and printmaking. His works often incorporate themes of fragility, ephemerality, and transformation. He has exhibited widely in major institutions across Europe, the U.S., and Japan.
