Published by New York Graphic Society, circa 1960. Plate signed.

This elegant composition by Giorgio de Chirico features two majestic horses standing along a quiet shoreline, rendered with a sculptural presence and timeless stillness. The figures, classical in form yet slightly enigmatic, reflect de Chirico’s deep engagement with antiquity and myth, central to his metaphysical vision.

Set against a serene coastal backdrop, the scene combines warm earthy tones with a soft, atmospheric sky, creating a sense of calm and introspection. The horses appear both grounded and symbolic—echoing themes of memory, nostalgia, and the passage of time that define much of de Chirico’s work.

Printed by the New York Graphic Society, this reproduction offers a beautiful, high-quality impression, with strong color and clarity. The plate signature adds to its authenticity and charm, characteristic of well-produced prints from the pre-digital poster era.

A refined and decorative image, ideal for both classical and contemporary interiors, and appealing to collectors of modern European art.

About the Artist

Giorgio de Chirico

Giorgio de Chirico (1888 – 1978) was an Italian artist and writer. De Chirico was born in Volos, Greece, to a Genoan mother and a Sicilian father. In the years before World War I, he founded the Scuola Metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists. After 1919, he became interested in traditional painting techniques, and worked in a neoclassical or neo-Baroque style, while frequently revisiting the metaphysical themes of his earlier work. In the paintings of his metaphysical period, de Chirico developed a repertoire of motifs—empty arcades, towers, elongated shadows, mannequins, and trains among others—that he arranged to create "images of forlornness and emptiness" that paradoxically also convey a feeling of "power and freedom".
