About the Artist

Frank Stella

Frank Stella (1936- ) is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker, noted for his work in minimalism and abstract art. He is amongst the artists of 1960s America dubbed "Post-Painterly Abstraction" by well-known art critic Clement Greenberg, a movement that pushed boundaries after the Abstract Expressionism of the 40s and 50s. Stella was interested in the painting as an object, rather than as a depiction of something, and as a result his work has an immediacy which provokes a more emotional response.
