Baird, Dwight

DWIGHT BAIRD Red, White N' Blue, 1995

In Red, White 'n Blue, Dwight Baird subtly includes an unmarked baseball among those painted with existing team logos, symbolizing the anticipation of a future MLB expansion team. The team that was added in the early 2000s is the Washington Nationals, who began play in 2005 after the relocation and rebranding of the Montreal Expos.

At the time of Baird's creation, this unmarked baseball could represent the uncertainty and excitement surrounding MLB's expansion and the league's evolving history. The Nationals are now a prominent part of the league, further adding significance to this thoughtful detail in Baird's artwork.

About the Artist

Dwight Baird

Canadian born artist Dwight Baird has been painting full-time for the last forty-five years. For the last twenty years, Baird has been working in acrylics, developing a new style of contemporary realism - mixing broad impressionist brush strokes combined with specific detailed areas in his work. He is also a member of the Canadian Watercolour Society. Baird has produced an extensive series of pieces on Cuba, depicting many facets of the daily struggle throughout the country. These works are not only a dramatic illustration of the challenges of urban life but also a historical documentation of a country striving for dramatic change - a pictorial record of a time in their history which will never be seen again.
