The Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, built between 1518 and 1527, is a prime example of early French Renaissance architecture. It was commissioned by Gilles Berthelot, the Mayor of Tours and Treasurer-General to King Francis I. The château was not owned by any queen of France as a personal retreat. Its design reflects a blend of French traditions and innovative Italian decorations, characteristic of the period during Francis I's reign.
