Vintage Air France travel poster for Italy designed by Georges Mathieu, whose energetic calligraphic style became synonymous with postwar European abstraction. Against a vivid blue background, Mathieu transforms the map of Italy into a whirlwind of golden gestures, sweeping arabesques, and explosive movement, visually echoing the drama and exuberance of the Italian Baroque tradition.

The composition celebrates Italy as a land of spectacle, ritual, and artistic intensity—“whirls, arabesques, vortices… life overflowing.” Commissioned during the golden age of international air travel, the poster reflects the era when airlines collaborated with major contemporary artists to create sophisticated promotional imagery rather than conventional advertising.

Printed during the pre-digital poster era, this striking Air France poster combines fine art, graphic design, and travel history in a uniquely collectible format. Mathieu’s dynamic brushwork and theatrical composition make this one of the more visually memorable European airline posters of the period.

An exceptional decorative and historical piece for collectors of vintage travel posters, postwar abstraction, and Air France ephemera. Framing available upon request.

About the Artist

Georges Mathieu

Born in 1921, Georges Mathieu began painting in 1942, after studying literature and philosophy. Creator of Tachism he introduced Western art the notion of speed. In 1967, on the occasion of the publication of 15 posters created for Air France, an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, inaugurated by Andre Malraux. Fundamentally abstract, Mathieu manages, without abdicating his personality, to be translated, by other signs as images, emotional feelings aroused by air travel.
